OUR STORIES

Mercedes Cornelius

Hey! My name is Tina Javan. I'm from Santa Barbara. I'm a second year UCLA biochemistry student (pre-med), specializing in anesthesiology or oncology. I took the cal teach elementary science course at UCLA with over 40 hours internship experience before teaching students at NSEY.  I'm kind of a health freak and I loved to exercise/weightlift during my spare time. Also, I love frozen yogurt and cannot help but eat tons of it when I am in the dinning halls. Another favorite of mine is the violin! I've been playing it since I was four and now I play in the ucla near-east ensemble. Come to my concert sometime and support NSEY!

Hey everyone! My name is Mercedes C. I'm from South Florida, I enjoy a diverse amount of activities on a very wide spectrum, such as martial arts, playing the piano and violin, reading the bible, and eating. I'm a third year UCLA student majoring in the physical sciences and applied math. My goal in NSEY is to help generate the next generation of scientists in the underepresented community. I enjoy sports, especially football and hockey; I also love using these kinds of cool activities to make science and math interesting for little kids. One of my most cherished scientists is Albert Einstein, and one of my favorite quotes from him is "A question that often drives me crazy, am I, or are the others crazy?". I look forward to our journey, and I hope you enjoy watching us grow and succeed in our endeavors.

Hello! My name is Liz Feng and I'm from China. I'm a third year Applied Math and History double major at UCLA. These two fields sound unrelated at first, but if you think about it, they follow a similar pattern. I think to study math, you don't need to be smart, you just need to start as early as possible. My goal in NSEY is to try to help those kids, who don't have a chance to get familiar with math early in their lives, all become math geniuses. Trust me, it's not that tough. I also love doing sports in my spare time. I am a very good badminton player, a so-so basketball shooter and a beautiful swimmer. Besides that, I really love music. I used to have a band in high school, but it turns out that I'm not cool enough to be a musician who knows history and math, better to be a mathematician or historian who knows music.

Hi there! My name is Sounak Mitra and I'm from Calcutta, India. I'm a Computer Science major debating between Cognitive Science or Math as my double major. My passions involve trivia quizzing, debating and photography. It also makes me happy to come forward and help out the community - a passion that I developed during high school while working for the Missionaries of Charity and an NGO named Sanchar. My goal with NSEY is to provide an early start to the children we are working with and hopefully, impart the passion for math and science that I have developed over the years to the kids.

Hi. My name is Emily Tran. I moved from Vietnam six years ago. I’m a senior student at UCLA and majoring in mathematics education. I love mathematics because I don’t have to memorize so much as I do studying for other subjects. I think mathematics can be fun and natural for everyone, with sufficient practice. Have you ever gotten less change than you are supposed to get when you buy something? Nope, right? (Well, hopefully not!)  If I tell a kid who enjoys ice cream to choose between an ice cream and two ice creams, what do you think he would choose?  It’s mathematics. It’s his nature to choose two ice creams becasue its plus one more. Mathematics is everywhere in our lives, and we use it very often without recognizing it. I love to further develop this nature in the kids of NSEY so that they all can enjoy learning mathematics, thrive in  mathematics, and become successful in their future endeavors.
