ABOUT

MISSION AND HISTORY

The National Society of Empowered Youth (NSEY) is a non profit student run organization at UCLA. We aim to promote early education of science for primary school students from historically marginalized and underrepresented populations within STEM fields. By collaborating with Tom Bradley Elementary School, we are devoted to giving 2nd-5th grade students science lessons bi-weekly. These lessons vary from scientific experiments that stimulate students interest to after-school tutoring. We want to get these students to know about science as early as possible so that they will pursue these fields in their future academic careers. We represent STEM students from UCLA who wish to help create the next generate of mathematical and scientific entrepenuers.

FUTURE TASK

We have 5 major goals:

  • First, we want to solidfy a set of curriculum that is suitable for primary school students to understand and pursue the sciences.

  • Second, we want to conduct research on how much the students have progressed after following our curriculum.

  • Third, we want to encourage more underrepresented students to make science as their career path by visiting scientific inspiriational locations and inviting relevant speakers to further encourage the youth.

  • Fourth, we want to identify how general policy can change to make it easier for underrepresented students to approach STEM field from a young age.

  • Fifth, we want to raise awareness amongst UCLA students regarding the lack of representation of students of color in the STEM fields.
