ClASSES CENTER:

Curriculum:

  • Poll of interesting topics to our specific group of youth

  • General Pretest on overall scientific interest and capability

  • Pertinent pretest on experiment/topic being conducted that week

  • Video demonstration and experimental facts and guides

  • Perform the experiment

  • Conduct pertinent post test and have a discussion to demonstrate understanding of the material

  • General Posttest on overall improved scientific interest and capability

On-Site

Cal Teach Elementary School Course at UCLA is the way to get to know what turtorship means and how to be a qualified tutor. It involves 40 hours internship experience and it could be enrolled as a UCLA units.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

AND ADVOCACY

NSEY site visit once or twice a  week for a duration of 3 hours

First half is snack distribution and homework assistance.

second half is a science based activity, either experiment or demonstration of a scientific field’s application.

Experiment One:

Physics

Bottle Rocket Experiment:

Have you ever built a rocket?

How does the angle of the rocket effect where the rocket lands?

How does the amount of mass of the rocket effect the rocket’s speed? What about multistages of mass on the rocket?

What is the rocket equation?

Would you ever want to be an astronaut or an rocket engineer (aerospace engineer)?

Experiment Two:

Physics

Goblet as Music Instrument:

What are types of musical instruments?

Do you think that glasses filled with water can make music?

Have you ever thought about how music being produced?

Do you like music?

Do you notice the difference between higher pitch and lower pitch?

Fun videos: the film of Bathing Beauty

Experiment Three: Chemistry

Diet Coke & Mentos Experiment:

What do you predict will happen when mentos are added to diet coke?

What is a solid, liquid, and gas?

Do you know what nucleation is?

Do you know what carbon dioxide is?

What are physical changes?

What are chemical changes?

Key concepts to focus on: chemical changes, physical changes, three phases of state ( liquid, gas, solid)

Experiment Four:

Chemistry

Museum Trip

Football Activity

Electrolysis of Water:

What are electrolytes? What is a good source of electrolytes?

Why are electrolytes important?

How does distilled water and tap water differ in comparison of electrolytes?

Do you know what electrolysis is?

Do you know what a current is?

What is energy?

What is electricity?

END OF THE YEAR ACTIVITY/FIELD TRIP: Trip to CA Science Center Friday or weekend

Free general admission for NSEY members and youth

Assisted by 2-3 adult chaperones from NSEY partner school

School bus transportation for the students

Lunch provided

Small groups led by NSEY members or adult chaporones

UCLA FOOTBALL TEAM Guest Stars:

Projectile motion, velocity, acceleration, physcial agility

Did you enjoy seeing how Physics is incorporated into one of your favorite sports activity?

Does Physics make up most of football, some of football, none of football, or little of football?

Which did you find more interesting in this activity football or physics?
